Video Quality and Technical Specs

Julia EskinUpdated

EventLive streams and replays video in up to Full HD (1080p). 4K isn't supported for streaming, replays or downloads. Below are the specs for streaming from the app or an encoder, uploading videos, watching and downloading.

Streaming from the EventLive app

  • iPhone: streams in 720p by default. To stream in 1080p, turn on the 1080p option in your iPhone's Settings app under EventLive (how).
  • Android: streams in 720p at 30 fps.
  • The app adjusts the bitrate to your connection while you're live. On iPhone that's up to about 1.8 Mbps in 720p or 2.8 Mbps in 1080p; on Android, up to about 2.5 Mbps.
  • The app also saves a higher-quality backup recording on the phone while you stream. See How To Record Your Event While Streaming.

Streaming from a computer, camera or encoder (RTMP)

  • Video codec: H.264, or HEVC (H.265) if your encoder supports it.
  • Resolution and bitrate: 1920×1080 at 4 to 6 Mbps for 1080p, or 1280×720 at 2 to 3 Mbps for 720p.
  • Frame rate: 30 fps is recommended. Sources at 24, 25 or 50 fps play at 25 fps; other frame rates play at 30 fps.
  • Keyframe interval: 2 seconds.
  • Audio: AAC, 48 kHz.
  • 1080p output: send exactly 1920×1080 to get 1080p. Other sizes, including 4K, are delivered at up to 720p.

See Recommended RTMP Live Streaming Settings for encoder settings.

How viewers watch: adaptive bitrate

EventLive converts every stream into several quality levels. Each viewer's player switches between them automatically to suit their connection, so slower connections keep playing at a lower quality instead of stopping. This is adaptive bitrate streaming (HLS), and the replay uses the same quality levels.

  • 1080p stream (1920×1080): viewers get 1080p (about 3.5 Mbps), 720p (about 2.5 Mbps) and 432p (about 0.6 Mbps).
  • 720p or any other size: viewers get 720p (about 3 Mbps) and 432p (about 0.6 Mbps).
  • Audio: AAC stereo, 48 kHz, 128 kbps.

Uploaded videos (Manage Video)

  • File types: MP4 or MOV, up to 200 GB, from the website or the Android app. The iPhone app gets the same uploader in version 4.3.1; older iPhone versions take files up to 10 GB, so upload bigger files from the website.
  • For a 1080p replay: upload a 1920×1080 (16:9) file with H.264 video and AAC audio.
  • Conversion: uploads are converted to up to Full HD, into the same quality levels as live streams, at 30 fps. Any video of 1920×1080 or larger, including 4K and portrait videos, becomes 1080p, 720p and 432p; smaller videos become 720p and 432p. Videos that aren't 16:9 are fitted inside the frame with bars. (iPhone app versions before 4.3.1 keep 1080p only for files that are exactly 1920×1080.)
  • Originals: EventLive doesn't keep the original file, and a 4K file isn't delivered in 4K. If someone needs the 4K master, send them the original file directly, for example with a Google Drive, Dropbox or WeTransfer link.

Downloads

Download Video on the event's download page gives one MP4 file of the whole event, with H.264 video and AAC audio. It's in the best quality EventLive has for that event, up to 1080p. See How to Access and Download Livestream Recording After the Event.

Internet speed

You need at least 3 Mbps upload speed for 720p and 5 Mbps for 1080p. See Recommended and Minimum Upload Speeds for Streaming.
